What is Apple Silicon M1 Chip?
Until now, Apple has been using Intel processors on its Macbook Air and Macbook Pro models. Apple iPhones and iPads were using Apple’s own A14 and A13 Bionic chipset, which offered great performance and battery life on these devices. With the M1 chip, Apple is bringing the same tech – an ARM-based CPU – to the laptop.
Apple M1 chip is tailor-made for Macbooks hence you can get great performance and battery life. According to Apple’s promo page, M1 is by far the highest‑performance CPU Apple has ever built. Like many other chipsets, this has two types of cores – 4 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores – to get the best out of both worlds. Apple also boasts the M1 chip has the world’s fastest integrated graphics on a personal computer. You are getting an 8 core GPU with up to 2X faster GPU performance than other laptops with integrated GPUs.
With these new M1 chip, the Macbook Pro 13 offers up to 17 hours of Wireless web browsing and 20 hours of Media playback. The new Macbook Air 13 on the other hand offers 15 hours of web browsing and up to 18 hours of media playback. All these new models ship with macOS Big Sur which is engineered to take full advantage of all the capability and power of the M1 chip.
Since the M1 chip is based on Apple’s iPhone and iPad chips, you can now run these iPhone and iPad apps on the new Macbook Air and Pro natively.
