Android 14 is shaping up nicely. You can already install beta versions on eligible devices, such as the Google Pixel series. With Android 14, Google is introducing some new APIs. One of these is a new BatteryManager API that will allow you to read battery information on your Android smartphone.
If you want to know how many charge cycles your Android smartphone’s battery has gone through, you can use an app called Batt, developed by developer Narek. Batt is a simple app that shows battery status information on Android devices. However, you will need Android 14 for this to work properly.
Amazon India has a promo teaser up showcasing one of the most anticipated smartphones of the upcoming year 2023 – The OnePlus 11 5G. It will launch in India on Feb 7th and will be available to pre-order / purchase soon after. OnePlus Buds 2 Pro is also expected to launch along with this smartphone.
What to expect from OnePlus 11 5G ? – Specs and Features
Qualcomm SM8550 Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm) processor
Hasselblad cameras
Triple rear cameras
Higher SUPERVOOC fast charging speeds
Bigger Sony image sensors
Alert Slider is back.
OnePlus has always used the latest powerful Qualcomm chipset to power it’s flagship smartphones. The OnePlus 11 is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor which will also be used on upcoming 2023 flagship smartphones like Vivo X90 Pro+, Nubia Z50, Xiaomi 13 Series, Motorola X40, Samsung Galaxy S23 series etc.
OnePlus has always been generous with the amount of ram their smartphones come with. Expect the base model to come with 8GB with a 16GB ram model expected.
OnePlus is bringing back a feature that they skipped on their last released flagship smartphone – the Alert slider. The promo pages have confirmed it will make a comeback on the OnePlus 11.
OnePlus’s partnership with Hasselblad is still on. So the OnePlus 11 cameras will naturally be tuned by the Hasselblad team and will come with their branding. The image sensors that capture the actual image, are expected to be made by Sony. While many manufacturers have started using a big 1-inch sensor like the 1-inch 50 MP Sony IMX989 sensor on their smartphones, it’s highly unlikely OnePlus 11 would feature this.
If you have been out of touch with all the Never Settle OnePlus news, you would be disappointed to know that OnePlus no longer ship their smartphones with Oxygen OS which was a great Stock Android-style OS with some great features. It now uses Oppo’s color OS style UI in their smartphones.
The year 2022 showered us with some great smartphones. Samsung, Apple, Google, Asus, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, etc all came up with their flagship smartphones for the mobile markets worldwide. Almost all high-end smartphones from these companies were received and sold well. More and more companies are realizing the huge potential of the big Indian market, and are now launching the smartphone in India on the global launch day itself.
In 2022, Apple up the game with 4 new iPhones. It included two iPhone 14 Pro models and two regular iPhone 14 models. Google soon followed suit and launched the Pixel 7 Series with Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models which were basically an improved version of last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Samsung continued their foldable smartphone game with Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold4 smartphones. OnePlus which no longer go with a Never Settle attitude came out with their OnePlus 10 Series with the latest one in the series called OnePlus 10T 5G.
Asus, perhaps made the most interesting flagship, Android smartphone of the year 2022. The Zenfone 9 which is powered by Qualcomm® Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform features a 5.9-inch display making it one of the most compact high-end smartphones you can buy today anywhere in the world.
2023 is just around the corner. Let’s have a look at some of the best Android smartphones expected to be launched soon in the coming year.
What to expect from 2023 Flagship Android Smartphones
1-inch Sony camera sensors
8K video recording support
Latest flagship Snapdragon processor
shipping with Android 13 or newer
‘Pro’ and ‘Plus’ models
Faster Wired Fast charging and Wireless charging
maybe a Mini LED screen ( highly unlikely )
240hz refresh rate smartphones
6Ghz WiFi 6E support
5G network support out of the box
No charger adapter in the box
up to 10x periscope telephoto lens
No more silly 2MP macro cameras
AI + Computation photography magic
Samsung Galaxy S23 Series
Samsung no longer makes Galaxy Note series smartphones, instead, they now bring the features we loved on the Note series to their flagship S Series smartphones. The Galaxy S23 is expected to launch in Feb 2023 during the Galaxy Unpacked event. S23 series is expected to feature a 200MP main camera, of course, made by Samsung. If Samsung get’s everything right, this should blow other camera smartphones out of the water with ease.
Samsung is expected to launch 3 variants with the S23 Series – Galaxy S23 ( cheapest model ), S23 Plus ( flagship model ), and an S23 Ultra with all flagship features crammed in. We might also see an S23 FE ( Fan Editon ) down the road.
Google Pixel 8 Series
Last month ( Oct 2022 ), Google launched their Pixel 7 Series in many markets including India. These were well-received thanks to their incredible cameras and overall vanilla stock Android performance. In the interwebs, there are already talks about what to expect in the next-gen Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models. We can expect a new Google Tensor G3 chip, with new and improved rear cameras as well as plenty of new software magic which often are exclusive to the series.
Before the Pixel 8 Series, Google will be launched the Pixel 7A model with the Tensor G2 chip. It is expected to carry the same main camera as the Pixel 7 Flagship models. If the price is right, this smartphone is going to sell well worldwide.
OnePlus 11 Series
OnePlus is no longer run by OnePlus. It is now merged with Oppo Mobiles and now offers Color OS on their Android smartphones instead of the popular Oxygen OS. Oppo is a big player in the mobile industry and often comes up with features very early than their competitors. For eg, they were one of the first to launch Android smartphones with an HD screen and a Full HD screen. They also love to experiment with out-of-the-world features like the rotating camera we saw on the old Oppo N1. So having Oppo handling the OnePlus, we can expect some great smartphones in the upcoming OnePlus 11 Series. OnePlus will also be launching some smartphones in the more affordable Nord series.
Oppo is expected to unveil Oppo Reno9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro Plus models soon. It is expected to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 8000 chipset instead of Qualcomm Snapdragon.
Even though the first Samsung Galaxy Fold was notorious for its very fragile built quality, Samsung learned from its mistakes and now sells very good quality foldable smartphones. While its competitors like Xiaomi have started building foldable mobiles, Samsung continues to be the king in this series of smartphones.
In the second half of 2023, we can expect Samsung to launch Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 smartphones with the latest Qualcomm processor and top-end features.
Xiaomi 13 Series
In the early days, Xiaomi used to launch affordable, best-value-for-money Android smartphones worldwide. They continue to produce such smartphones and being sold well in markets like India. They now also launch some high-quality smartphones with cutting-edge features.
Xiaomi 12S Ultra which has a 1-inch image sensor is already out but is not available in India as of this writing. So this may be one of the smartphones we can possibly see at the start of 2023 in India. Xiaomi is also expected to launch next-gen Xiaomi 14 Series smartphones soon.
Google has officially launched the Pixel 7 Series in many countries including India. If you look at these devices and read the specs sheets, you would be sure tempted to skip this series and wait for the next generation Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models as the new Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 7 have a lot in common with the last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
The main camera is the same. The ultra-wide-angle camera is the same. The processor inside is almost the same. The displays as well. Why would you want to upgrade to a new phone or buy it when you can get the older generation models for a cheaper price?
Let’s analyze. What’s the number one reason people buy high-end smartphones these days? Even though you could argue a few would buy it for a high-quality display, a high-end processor performance, or just to show off the fruit logo on the back, the majority buy an expensive new flagship smartphone to get the best camera experience. The new iPhone 14 Pro models and the Google Pixel 7 Pro models are going to be bought for their cameras by the most rather than their displays or fast processors.
Let’s talk about smartphone cameras. Over the years, Smartphone cameras have come a long way. Thanks to the computational photography magic on both iPhones and Google Pixels, or just take any other phone, whether it be flagship phones from Samsung or OnePlus, you can easily create high-quality photos with these modern-day smartphone camera sensors. Let’s assume you have all these smartphones, and you take a ton of photos in the daytime, you would be surprised to see the differences in quality between these new smartphone cameras aren’t that big. You surely can see a difference if you Pixel-peep between a high-end iPhone and a low-end Android smartphone. But people don’t view photos like that. If you post these on places like Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, etc, if you didn’t mention the smartphone name, most wouldn’t be able to differentiate between a regular landscape photo taken on a Pixel and a low-budget Android phone.
There are, however some areas in which high-end Apple iPhones and Google Pixels shine. For eg, Night shots.
Google used the same main camera from Pixel 2 onwards to Pixel 6a, still every new generation produced better images ( Again, you would need to pixel peep to see these differences often ). The new Pixel 7 Pro is using the same main camera sensor as the last-gen Pixel 6 Pro. Even though not confirmed, we can expect the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro to use the same sensor as Google has for a couple of years tuning their Google Camera app to churn out perfect photos from this sensor. If Google plans to introduce a completely new sensor in the upcoming Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8, then they will have the extra task of tuning all the algorithms to match the new sensor which would be a time-consuming task for even a giant corporation like Google.
Why do I think you should get the Google Pixel 7 Pro if you love photography?
New Macro Mode
10bit HDR recording
Unblur feature
Better telephoto lens
New Super res zoom algorithms
4K @ 30fps on all rear cameras
Cinematic blur ( Apple had it in iPhone 13 Pro )
With the Pixel 7 Pro, Google is introducing some new features in the camera department. It has better zoom controls, new upscaling algorithms to offer better digital zoom, a macro mode, a better telephoto lens, 10bit HDR recording, 4K @ 60fps on all rear cameras, unblur feature, etc. If we look at the history of camera hardware changes landed on Pixel phones, the next-gen Pixel 8 Series is expected to carry almost identical hardware ( maybe a new Google Tensor G3 chip that supports 8K Video recording ), with improvements made with Google’s software magic. So many of the new software chances, if Google chooses, can land on the Pixel 7 Pro via Pixel feature drops.
The best camera is the one you have in your pocket they say. With the Pixel 7 Pro in your pocket, you are getting a camera with macro capabilities, an ultra-wide-angle lens, a regular lens, a 5x zoom lens with new upscaling algorithms, a camera that can record 10-bit HDR videos which can be uploaded straight to many social media platforms thanks to Google working with them, real tone that captures subject’s real skin tone, Night modes, and Astrophotography modes, Cinematic Blur in videos etc.
This smartphone is a real camera powerhouse, perfectly made for the modern social media generation. IMO Google Pixel 7 Pro is the best flagship Android Camera Smartphone you should buy today ( I have grabbed one from Flipkart already ).
