Top 5 Android Smartphones to look out for in 2023

The year 2022 showered us with some great smartphones. Samsung, Apple, Google, Asus, OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, etc all came up with their flagship smartphones for the mobile markets worldwide. Almost all high-end smartphones from these companies were received and sold well. More and more companies are realizing the huge potential of the big Indian market, and are now launching the smartphone in India on the global launch day itself.

In 2022, Apple up the game with 4 new iPhones. It included two iPhone 14 Pro models and two regular iPhone 14 models. Google soon followed suit and launched the Pixel 7 Series with Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models which were basically an improved version of last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Samsung continued their foldable smartphone game with Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold4 smartphones. OnePlus which no longer go with a Never Settle attitude came out with their OnePlus 10 Series with the latest one in the series called OnePlus 10T 5G.

Asus, perhaps made the most interesting flagship, Android smartphone of the year 2022. The Zenfone 9 which is powered by Qualcomm® Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile Platform features a 5.9-inch display making it one of the most compact high-end smartphones you can buy today anywhere in the world.

2023 is just around the corner. Let’s have a look at some of the best Android smartphones expected to be launched soon in the coming year.

What to expect from 2023 Flagship Android Smartphones

  • 1-inch Sony camera sensors
  • 8K video recording support
  • Latest flagship Snapdragon processor
  • shipping with Android 13 or newer
  • ‘Pro’ and ‘Plus’ models
  • Faster Wired Fast charging and Wireless charging
  • maybe a Mini LED screen ( highly unlikely )
  • 240hz refresh rate smartphones
  • 6Ghz WiFi 6E support
  • 5G network support out of the box
  • No charger adapter in the box
  • up to 10x periscope telephoto lens
  • No more silly 2MP macro cameras
  • AI + Computation photography magic

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series

Samsung no longer makes Galaxy Note series smartphones, instead, they now bring the features we loved on the Note series to their flagship S Series smartphones. The Galaxy S23 is expected to launch in Feb 2023 during the Galaxy Unpacked event. S23 series is expected to feature a 200MP main camera, of course, made by Samsung. If Samsung get’s everything right, this should blow other camera smartphones out of the water with ease.

Samsung is expected to launch 3 variants with the S23 Series – Galaxy S23 ( cheapest model ), S23 Plus ( flagship model ), and an S23 Ultra with all flagship features crammed in. We might also see an S23 FE ( Fan Editon ) down the road.

Google Pixel 8 Series

Last month ( Oct 2022 ), Google launched their Pixel 7 Series in many markets including India. These were well-received thanks to their incredible cameras and overall vanilla stock Android performance. In the interwebs, there are already talks about what to expect in the next-gen Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models. We can expect a new Google Tensor G3 chip, with new and improved rear cameras as well as plenty of new software magic which often are exclusive to the series.

Before the Pixel 8 Series, Google will be launched the Pixel 7A model with the Tensor G2 chip. It is expected to carry the same main camera as the Pixel 7 Flagship models. If the price is right, this smartphone is going to sell well worldwide.

OnePlus 11 Series

OnePlus is no longer run by OnePlus. It is now merged with Oppo Mobiles and now offers Color OS on their Android smartphones instead of the popular Oxygen OS. Oppo is a big player in the mobile industry and often comes up with features very early than their competitors. For eg, they were one of the first to launch Android smartphones with an HD screen and a Full HD screen. They also love to experiment with out-of-the-world features like the rotating camera we saw on the old Oppo N1. So having Oppo handling the OnePlus, we can expect some great smartphones in the upcoming OnePlus 11 Series. OnePlus will also be launching some smartphones in the more affordable Nord series.

Oppo is expected to unveil Oppo Reno9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro Plus models soon. It is expected to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 8000 chipset instead of Qualcomm Snapdragon.

Update: OnePlus 11 5G Launching in India on Feb 7th, 2023 [ Amazon.in ]

Samsung Fold 2023 Series

Even though the first Samsung Galaxy Fold was notorious for its very fragile built quality, Samsung learned from its mistakes and now sells very good quality foldable smartphones. While its competitors like Xiaomi have started building foldable mobiles, Samsung continues to be the king in this series of smartphones.

In the second half of 2023, we can expect Samsung to launch Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 smartphones with the latest Qualcomm processor and top-end features.

Xiaomi 13 Series

In the early days, Xiaomi used to launch affordable, best-value-for-money Android smartphones worldwide. They continue to produce such smartphones and being sold well in markets like India. They now also launch some high-quality smartphones with cutting-edge features.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra which has a 1-inch image sensor is already out but is not available in India as of this writing. So this may be one of the smartphones we can possibly see at the start of 2023 in India. Xiaomi is also expected to launch next-gen Xiaomi 14 Series smartphones soon.

Update: Xiaomi 13 Series will launch in India on Feb 26th. Amazon.in has a promo page up showcasing features.

How to Hide Desktop Icons in Ubuntu 22.10

A lot of Ubuntu Users prefer a clean desktop without icons displayed. Historically, people used to disable desktop icons easily with gconf-editor or dconf-editor and by entering commands like gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false in the terminal.

However, these commands and workarounds do not work well in newer Ubuntu Linux operating system versions like Ubuntu 22.10.

In Ubuntu 22.10, you can easily disable/hide Desktop icons using a Gnome Shell Extension.

What is a Gnome Shell Extension ?
The official description reads ‘GNOME Shell extensions are small pieces of code written by third party developers that modify the way GNOME works. Since extensions are created outside of the normal GNOME design and development process, they are supported by their authors, rather than by the GNOME community. Some features first implemented as extensions might find their way into future versions of GNOME.’

How to disable Desktop Icons in Ubuntu 22.10
Go to the Gnome Extensions Library page and install the Desktop Icons NG (DING) extension. After successful installation, you can enable/disable this extension to make Desktop icons appear or disappear. It’s that easy.

I would also recommend you install Extension List Gnome Extension by grroot which places a drop-down list of installed extensions in the top panel. This helps you easily enable and disable your installed extensions.
