MKBHD aka Marques Brownlee reviews OnePlus 12

In his latest video, Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, takes a look and reviews the OnePlus 12. Overall, he seems impressed with the phone, but there are a few things he doesn’t like.

Screenshot from 2024 02 12 05 44 07

The Good

  • Big and bright display: The OnePlus 12 has a 6.78-inch 1440p LTPO Pro XDR display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Brownlee says that the display is bright and easy to read outdoors, and that the 120Hz refresh rate makes everything look smooth and responsive.
  • Long-lasting battery: The OnePlus 12 has a 5400mAh battery, which is larger than the battery in the OnePlus 11. Brownlee was able to get a full day of use on a single charge, even with heavy use. The phone also supports 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, so you can quickly top up the battery when you need to.
  • Improved cameras: The cameras on the OnePlus 12 have been upgraded from the OnePlus 11, and Brownlee says that they take good photos and videos in good lighting conditions. However, he notes that they are not quite as good as the cameras on some other flagship phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
  • Other features: The OnePlus 12 has a number of other features that Brownlee likes, such as an in-display fingerprint sensor, an alert slider, and a USB-C port. It also runs OxygenOS 14, which is a clean and customizable version of Android 14.
Screenshot from 2024 02 12 05 41 42

The Bad

  • Curved display: The OnePlus 12 has a curved display, which can be prone to glare and light falloff. Brownlee also found that it can be difficult to type on the edges of the display.
  • Average fingerprint sensor: The in-display fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 12 is not the best. Brownlee found that it was sometimes slow and inaccurate.
  • Limited software updates: The OnePlus 12 only gets four years of software updates and five years of security updates. This is less than some other flagship phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Google Pixel 8 Pro etc.
Screenshot from 2024 02 12 05 43 25

Overall

Brownlee says that the OnePlus 12 is a good phone for the price, especially if you are looking for a phone with a great display, long battery life, and fast charging. However, if you are looking for the best possible camera or the longest software support, you might want to consider a different phone.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • The OnePlus 12 is only available in a limited number of colors.
  • The phone does not have an IP rating for water resistance.
  • There is no expandable storage.

Overall, the OnePlus 12 is a good phone with a lot to offer, especially for the price. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before you buy it.

Performance:

Under the hood, the Dell gn5530n7hy001orb1o G15 5530 laptop boasts a 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13450HX processor and an NVIDIA RTX 3050 graphics card. This combo tackles most modern games at moderate settings with commendable fluidity. Expect smooth sailing in popular titles like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and even some AAA games on reduced graphics settings. However, pushing the latest graphical powerhouses to their limits might reveal frame rate hiccups.

The Intel Core i5-13450HX processor has 10-cores with 6 Performance-cores and 4 Efficient-cores. The turbo boost clock supported is 4.60Ghz.

Design-wise, the G15 leans towards a modern aesthetic with a playful twist. Choose from three distinct color options that blend retro vibes with contemporary sleekness. The backlit keyboard with programmable keys caters to both aesthetics and functionality, letting you personalize your gaming experience.

Battery Life and Thermals:

Brace yourself for the trade-off inherent in most gaming laptops: battery life. The G15 prioritizes performance, resulting in a modest 2-3 hours of unplugged use under light workloads. Remember, gaming will drain the battery even faster, so keep your charger handy.

Thermals, however, are well-managed. The G15 employs an advanced cooling system with four heat pipes and improved fans. This effectively dissipates heat during intense gaming sessions, keeping your system running cool and preventing performance throttling.

Considering its price point, the G15 offers commendable value. You get a capable gaming machine with a stylish design, decent upgradability, and a smooth gaming experience at moderate settings. However, if you crave top-tier graphical performance, longer battery life, or a high-fidelity display, you might need to explore pricier options like the ASUS ROG Strix G15 or Lenovo Legion 5.

Remember, the ideal gaming laptop depends on your individual priorities and budget. Weigh the G15’s strengths and weaknesses against your needs and explore alternatives to make an informed decision. Don’t forget to factor in the cost of essential gaming peripherals like a mouse, headset, and external monitor when budgeting for your purchase.
